Here is a recent case of Enlighten tooth whitening for one of our patients. Previously, she had tried tooth whitening treatments from the internet and beauticians, but they had not given her a noticable result. So, she travelled all the way from London to have this new treatment at our practice and was very pleased indeed!

People are working harder than ever, so why not play harder without the restrictions of dated varifocals?
Sirus is the new specialised sports lens here at Pollards – we can now provide people who have active lifestyles with a varifocal lens to meet their needs. The Sirus varifocal is produced with the latest technology called digital surfacing, creating a larger field of view for the wearer .
The front surface of the lens carries your distance prescription only, with the back surface having the varifocal prescription, to give you the following benefits:
- A wider area of vision, so if you’re turning your head too much reversing your car, this lens could be for you!
- “Shock-absorber” concept meaning that if a sudden head movement is required, like in most sports, then the vision is not compromised by the distortion on the edge of the lens unlike traditional varifocals where this is a common occurrence.
- All distances are comfortably clear without head movement – so that if you are a golfer, and want to view your put as well as looking at your golf ball in the distance, you can do so.
The Sirus lens is not just great for sports but for everyday use as well helping people who drive, use computers and want a better quality varifocal lens. The benefits of the lens for example when driving, the far vision zone is accurate and stable, the switch of looking from the road to the dashboard is effortless and also comfortable vision when looking in side mirror thanks to the wider fields.
As with all our spectacle lenses, the Sirus come with a 30-day money back guarantee – we are THAT confident in this lens! Read some of our patients’ comments about Sirus below.
Mr F, Woolley, Wakefield
“Having worn varifocals for many years, I tried the new Sirus varifocal as I am a keen golfer. I have noticed a massive improvement in my vision when playing golf. The rippling affect I used to get when
putting has almost disappeared. It’s the first time I’ve ever been able to wear
my varifocal lenses for a round of golf - it’s great!”
New Anti-Glare Coating

New Anti-Glare Coating!
This is a treatment you can have on your spectacle lenses to cut out glare from artificial light. There are many benefits to having this, some as follows;
When driving during the dark winter nights, there’s a lot of glare from headlights and streetlights and if the road surface is wet, all the reflections will show on your lenses, making it uncomfortable. An anti reflective coating will cut out the reflections and give clearer, sharper vision. This makes night driving for spectacle wearers a little easier!
- Computer users also will benefit from the coating as it will cut out glare and reflections from the screen as well as from lighting around you in the room.
- The cosmetic benefits of the anti reflective coating are fantastic. With a standard lens, people looking at you can see their own reflection and the background in your lenses. With the coating, not only do YOU see better, others can see the natural beauty of your eyes. If you’re having your photograph taken, your lenses will appear invisible!
The latest, most discreet anti reflective coating available is called ‘Neva Secret’. This has no green tinge to it like some coatings do. It’s completely colourless. An anti static layer is added to the lens coating which acts as a barrier against dust, this makes it much easier to keep clean and more transparent. You can tell the difference with the photos above.
Coloured Contact Lenses
Monday, October 5th, 2009
As a coloured contact lens wearer myself, I like the fact I can change my eye colour to match my mood, new hair colour or an outfit for those special occasions. With most of the colours looking very naturally striking, you will have everyone thinking how amazing your eyes are or alternatively a subtle change can look just as good.
I personally have very pale green natural eyes but choose to wear a bright blue on a daily basis, very much like the eye in the bottom left picture, so they look completely different! Have a look next time you are in the practice.
With several different ranges available we have colours to suit everyone whether you have a very dark or light natural eye colour. We will also look at your skin tone and hair colour to help you choose. As I have now been wearing coloured lenses for 5yrs (and tried every possible colour out there) I have experience to choose the right colour for you.
We have recently fitted coloured contact lenses for models at the Northwest Bridal Fashion Show in conjuction with Dolz Make up Artists, which was held in Manchester. The model above is weraing the new Sterling Grey coloured contact lenses.
The lenses are available with or without a prescription so are suitable for everybody, each pair will last for 30 days so you can change on a monthly basis if you can’t decide on a certain colour. Alternatively, there are also daily coloured contact lenses, which you would wear on special occasions then just throw away, without needing to bother with solutions and storage.
So no doubt your now thinking when can I start?!…..First of all you will need to have a copy of an eye test from the last 12months then you can make the appointment for a contact lens fitting where we will try several colours, ensure you have take them in and out on your own, then it’s just a case of deciding which colour you want to try first!
Please do not hesitate to ring the practice and ask any questions or to book your appointment!
I hope to see you all very soon modeling your new eye colours!

Childrens’ Eyecare News, Wakefield
Friday, October 2nd, 2009Pollards Optical Clinic has just become part of the Eye Know Eye Care scheme. This Scheme, in association with the National Schools Partnership, has been created specifically for Key Stage 2 Children and aims to bring teachers and eyecare professionals together to improve knowledge of eye health in an innovation and fun way for children.
Schools currently do not have a national scheme in place to monitor the eye sight of school age children. As a result, the importance of healthy eye sight is often not being explained to children and their parents as it should. The Eye Know Eye Care scheme is a fantastic opportunity to resolve this issue.
A recent survey of 1,000 parents revealed that more than nine-in-10 parents (91%) said they take their child to have their hair cut at least once a year, with a similar proportion (89%) saying they go shopping for shoes this often. Less than half of parents asked (45%) said they take their child for an eye test at least once a year.
Rowena Ibbotson, Optometrist at Pollards, will be going into local schools and presenting to a classes / assemblies on the importance of eye care. As an Eye Know Eye Care registered optician, we have a short interactive presentation and additional materials such as games to involve the children.
Last year, around 10 local schools invited us to present in their assembly, with the question & answer session being the most interesting!
Rowena comments, “As health professionals we are finding more and more children that are falling behind in school simply due to a simple eye problem – sometimes glasses can correct this, or even eye exercises.”

Cosy nights in this winter
Friday, October 2nd, 2009The nights are getting longer now and it’s cold outside. Not much fun really, but it’s a good excuse for getting cozy in front of the fire with a good book, your favorite hobby, cross stitch, puzzles etc.
Some people though, may find that they can’t see as well as they would like in low lighting conditions because they have some sort of a visual problem.
Vision changes and problems can be caused by many different conditions. Common condition are as follows:
PRESBYOPIA: This is where you have difficulty focusing on objects that are close, you know, when your arms aren’t quite long enough! This often becomes noticeable in your early to mid 40’s. It’s easily solved though, you just need a pair of reading glasses with your most up to date prescription.
CATARACTS: This is a cloudiness of the lens in the eye, causing poor nighttime vision, halos around lights and sensitivity to glare. Lenses that react to the sunlight can help.
MACULAR DEGENERATION: This is loss of central vision, blurred vision or distorted vision (seeing wavy lines) and colours appearing faded.
We can provide specialized reading lights or ‘daylight lamps’ which will very much help people with cataracts or macular degeneration. Having a apir of reading glasses with the correct magnification can also make a big difference. Give us a call for more information.
World Sight Day Challenge!
Friday, October 2nd, 2009
Our practice is supporting the World Sight Day Challenge this month to raise funds for Optometry Giving Sight & Vision Aid overseas, two charities working together to raise funds to help people in developing countries.
This years’ World Sight Day Challenge focuses on gender and eye health. Funds raised by us will help women and girls who are blind or visually impaired due to uncorrected refractive error and who do not have access to an eye exam and a pair of glasses.
On Saturday 10th October we will be donating all fees from eye exams to this good cause.
We are also inviting our patients to make a small donation to support us, or just to bring in old spectacles that we can send to the third world.
