I have just attended a lecture about headaches given by Stephen Butterworth, Consultant Neurologist at Pinderfields Hospital. He discussed the most common causes of headaches, including migraines, medicines over use headaches, tension headaches and more. It was very interesting, as I regularly have patients who come and talk to me about their headaches, as they can be associated with eye strain. Around 50% of them are eye strain but 50% are not, so it was good to discuss the symptoms of non-ocular headaches and the reasons for why they occur. This helps us when we have a patient with headaches but we cannot find eye strain – we can then refer appropriately to the right professional.

Here at Pollards Optical Dental Clinic in Wakefield, a half an hour intial assessment with Dr Hassan will allow him to inspect the following areas in the mouth:

1. We check the jaw joint to make sure that it is healthy, stable, and pain free.
2. Check to see if the muscles of the jaw and face are sore and causing headaches.
3. We check all the soft tissues for the presence of Oral Cancer.
4. We check the gums for the presence of Gum disease, i.e bleeding gums, loose teeth etc
5. We look for signs of tooth wear caused by clenching and grinding and acidic foods.
6. We look for fillings that might be leaking or have decay around them.
7. Include all necassary small radiographs or X-rays to help diagnose any issues you may have.
8. We check too see that your bite patterns are stable and not contributing to pain in the jaw joint.
9. Inspect the gums for signs of recession.
10. Look with high power magnification for the early development of cracks with the teeth.

The above are just a few of the main things that Dr Hassan looks at during our initial inspection appointment. At the end of the appointment we will give you a written estimate of what treatment you require and how much the treatment will cost.

We have seen in the last few weeks a number of patients attending our dental practice in Wakefield West Yorkshire, near Leeds, suffering with long standing gum disease.
These patients have been suffering with bleeding gums for many years, the gums are shrinking back and a few teeth are starting too become mobile.
Dr Hassan has spend many sessions getting the oral hygiene up to a very high standard and provided intensive gum treatment to remove the harmful bacteria. Many patients have returned to the practice to comment, how for the first time they are cleaning there teeth without the bleeding gums.
