Childrens’ Eyecare News, Wakefield

Pollards Optical Clinic has just become part of the Eye Know Eye Care scheme. This Scheme, in association with the National Schools Partnership, has been created specifically for Key Stage 2 Children and aims to bring teachers and eyecare professionals together to improve knowledge of eye health in an innovation and fun way for children.

Schools currently do not have a national scheme in place to monitor the eye sight of school age children. As a result, the importance of healthy eye sight is often not being explained to children and their parents as it should. The Eye Know Eye Care scheme is a fantastic opportunity to resolve this issue.

A recent survey of 1,000 parents revealed that more than nine-in-10 parents (91%) said they take their child to have their hair cut at least once a year, with a similar proportion (89%) saying they go shopping for shoes this often. Less than half of parents asked (45%) said they take their child for an eye test at least once a year.

Rowena Ibbotson, Optometrist at Pollards, will be going into local schools and presenting to a classes / assemblies on the importance of eye care. As an Eye Know Eye Care registered optician, we have a short interactive presentation and additional materials such as games to involve the children.

Last year, around 10 local schools invited us to present in their assembly, with the question & answer session being the most interesting!

Rowena comments, “As health professionals we are finding more and more children that are falling behind in school simply due to a simple eye problem – sometimes glasses can correct this, or even eye exercises.”
