Sedation Dentistry, Wakefield

July 22nd, 2011

Sedation dentistry is used to provide a relaxing and anxiety free experience for patients during dental procedures. It enables those too afraid to go to the dentist to recieve dental care they need, while avoiding the common apprehension known as dental phobia.

What is Sedation?

Sedation is a process used to establish a relaxed, easy and calm state through the use of sedatives. The sedatives are placed in to the back of the hand and administered in to the blood system throughout treatment.   IV sedation does not actually induce sleep; instead, you remain conscious and can follow instructions from your dentist. However, the feeling of relaxation will be intense enough for you not to remember much about what happened under treatment.

Can anyone have sedation?

There are certain medical restrictions with IV Sedation so you will need to come to the practice for a new patient assessment where we can look at your medical history.  Once Dr Hassan is happy that you are suitable for the procedure, we can arrange a date for you to come back.

After the procedure you might feel a little light headed and may possibly want to sleep for the rest of the day so you will need to make sure someone can attend your appointment with you and stay with you for the rest of the day.

If you are interested in IV Sedation you can call the practice on 01924 373697 and ask to speak to Natalie for more information.

Pollards Teams up With Leading Contact Lens Supplier

June 21st, 2011

We have so many patients that try contact lenses then say, “I should have tried these years ago!” and “What, is it already on my eye?!” (see our website for video testimonials). The main reason is fear of the unknown— interestingly, the UK has the least amount of contact lens wearers in the EU. So we have teamed up with CibaVision & chosen July as the month of The Big Fit! Which means we are encouraging all of you to try contact lenses—and if you do want to try them, you get a FREE eye test & FREE contact lenses to take away!

We now stock many new technology contact lenses, particularly for dry eyes and also the latest varifocal contact lenses – so if you’ve tried them before and not got on with them, it’s worth giving us a call and trying them again.

Many of our patients are now happily wearing contact lenses for shopping, eating out and special occasions, whereas others have replaced their glasses altogether with contact lenses that you can sleep in!

Mrs Hallam had been wearing glasses for years – when we suggested she tried contact lenses she was very apprehensive, but  decided to give them a go. This is what Mrs Hallam said 1 month after her initial trial:

Dentures, Denture Adhesives and Dental Implants

June 16th, 2011

Dangers of denture adhesives

If you, or someone you know, is a denture wearer, you should be aware that there is new evidence that denture adhesives may be hazardous to your health and that the Food and Drug Administration is taking action.

The culprit is zinc, which is found in a number of denture creams, and the risk can be avoided with Wakefield dental implants.

Both ABC News’ “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Good Morning America” recently reported that long term and excessive use of zinc-containing denture adhesives could result in “serious and irreversible neurological damage.”

The FDA, which has received hundreds of complaints that long term overuse of one popular denture adhesive containing zinc caused serious nerve damage, is urging manufacturers of all denture creams with zinc to remove it from their products.

According to the FDA, consumers most at risk include people using excessive amounts of zinc-containing products over extended periods of time and people with poor fitting dentures.

1) The package labeling may not list zinc as an ingredient.
2) Users may not be aware that overexposure to zinc may lead to zinc toxicity, which may result in adverse health effects.
3) Adverse events may not manifest themselves for months to years while using the product and consumers may assume such events are caused by something other than the denture adhesive.

The Dr Hassan of Wakefield Pollards Optical Dental Clinic has welcome news for denture wearers who are concerned about the effects of zinc toxicity and who will appreciate no longer to have to use any adhesives: In one short visit, in most cases, we can easily add as few as two dental implants beneath a denture – providing a level of retention, security and comfort impossible to achieve with adhesives.

These dental implants, which act as anchors to which the denture is firmly attached, can truly be life altering for long-suffering denture wearers.

Brushing Your Teeth

June 12th, 2011

Correct brushing, good gum health, healthy teeth

At Pollards Optical Dental Clinic we understand that prevention is better the cure. Please take afew minates to read the following to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. If you have any questions please email Dr Hassan.

You most certainly brush your teeth, as you’re keen on having a pleasant breath and a nice, white smile.

But are you brushing correctly? Are you doing it at the right time?

You are brushing at the wrong time

You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, though three times is better.

Brushing before bed is a must. Removing bacteria from your mouth prevents them from attacking your teeth overnight.

In the morning, brush your teeth before breakfast, to remove the bacteria and plaque that has accumulated overnight.

You can also brush after lunch, but not more. Brushing too often can damage your gums.

You’re brushing and spitting

Once you’ve brushed your teeth, you probably rinse your mouth with water to get rid of the toothpaste flavour.

This is a mistake. You should not rinse your mouth, merely spit out the toothpaste.

This will leave a coating of fluoride on your teeth, which helps prevent tooth decay by inhibiting the chemical processes of plaque bacteria.

You’re not brushing for long enough, or too long

A quick once over will not do.

You should brush 2 to 3 minutes each time.

Anything less, and you may not properly clean your teeth.

Brushing for too long may irritate your gums.

You are using the wrong toothbrush

If you shop for your toothbrush on the basis of price or colour, think again.

The key thing in choosing a toothbrush is head size and bristle hardness.

The brush should be the right size for your mouth, not too big. You can tell it’s too big if you’re struggling to open your mouth wide to brush.

Buy a brush with bristles that are soft, as hard bristles can irritate your gums, especially if you brush too hard.

The bristles should be able to remove the plaque but not damage your teeth.

You’re brushing the wrong way

The recommended way to brush your teeth is not with horizontal strokes along your gums.

Instead, the current method recommended by the British Dental Health Foundation is to place the brush at 45 degrees against your gum line and move it in small circular movements on all the surfaces of every tooth.

Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower, keeping the bristles angled against the gum line.

Brush the biting surfaces of the teeth.

To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several small circular strokes with the front part of the brush.

Finally, brush your tongue. This will remove bacteria from its surface and freshen your breath.

You’re not rinsing your toothbrush enough

Bacteria grows on your toothbrush, so it is important to rinse it before and after use.

It will also remove any toothpaste that may be left on the brush.

After rinsing the brush, shake out the moisture, as a moist brush is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Your toothbrush is too old

The longer you use your toothbrush, the more bent and misshapen the bristles will be, which undermines their effectiveness.

You should replace your brush every three months, or once your bristles have lost their flexibility.

You’re not flossing

You may be diligent at brushing your teeth, but if you’re not flossing regularly, you’re failing to clean your teeth properly.

Bits of food will get stuck between your teeth in places where the bristles don’t reach. The food will decay and bacteria will attack your teeth and gums.

The only way to remove food may be by flossing, which is why you should make a habit of doing so daily.

Buy the right floss for your teeth – waxed if you have closely spaced teeth, or tougher floss if you have rough tooth edges.

Make sure you use enough floss, as reusing it may simply move bacteria between teeth.
